Dopo aver ‘battezzato’ anche la nuova promessa del tennis mondiale, la 15enne statunitense Carherine Bellis (che nel 2014 ha esordito in Italia raggiungendo la finale proprio sui campi del Cerri, e che pochi giorni fa, da n.211 del Mondo WTA, ha ricevuto a Miami i complimenti di Serena Williams), il torneo internazionale giovanile “Città di Santa Croce” Mauro Sabatini si appresta anche quest’anno a regalare ad appassionati e addetti ai lavori un’altra settimana di grande tennis giovanile.
La 37enne edizione di quello che è considerato il più importante torneo toscano juniores, il secondo d’Italia, il terzo europeo sulla terra rossa (dopo Milano e Parigi) e tra i primi 10 al Mondo, si svolgerà dall’11al 16 maggio: una settimana nella quale a Santa Croce sull’Arno sfileranno le “racchette” del futuro, e durante la quale sarà possibile ammirare il n.1 del domani, come hanno già dimostrato in passato gli enfant prodige Muster, Rios, Kuerten, Kafelnikovm, Hingis, Mauresmo, Cljister, Ivanovic, Safina, Wozniacki e Azarenka, tutti passati dalla cittadina del cuoio prima di approdare ai massimi vertici ATP e WTA.

Lo spessore tecnico e la forte competitività del torneo santacrocese – attesi anche per il 2015 circa 200 giovani di 40 Paesi del Mondo – è confermato dall’albo d’oro, dove spiccano solo 6 successi azzurri in 36 edizioni (il pisano Matteo Trevisan ultimo vincitore nel 2007 ma risale addirittura al 1989 l’ultima affermazione femminile con Gabriella Boschiero). Vincere a Santa Croce non è mai stato facile per nessuno, lo confermano le finali perse da Martina Hingis e Mjriana Lucic, da Guillermo Coria e Robin Soderling. E, ovviamente, da Catherine Bellis, l’ultima stella del tennis nata sotto il cielo di Santa Croce.
